Even before he got to Georgia Tech in 2009, Mfon Udofia had been identified as a coach in the making. The one who saw it in Udofia, then a star at Miller Grove High, was Charlton Young, the Yellow Jackets assistant coach whose dogged pursuit of him led Udofia to Tech.

“I think you’re going to play the game for money,” Young, now an assistant coach at Florida State, remembered telling Udofia. “I don’t know what level. But you’re definitely the next head coach at Georgia State.”

Young was right about the first part regarding his prized recruit, whom he never was able to coach, as he left Paul Hewitt’s staff after Udofia’s signing to become coach at his alma mater, Georgia Southern. Udofia played three seasons in the G League (then known as the D-League) and one final season in Europe. The second prediction hasn’t come true – at least not yet – but remember that Udofia is only 30.
