The first moments after the historic win were hazy.

Mike Brown was in Las Vegas earlier this month, having just guided the Nigerian national basketball team, a patchwork group of overseas pros and NBA role players, to a 90-87 upset over the superstars of Team USA. But Brown couldn’t remember what he said in the locker room after the win. All he could remember was that after the first waves of shock, the significance of the victory hit him.

“Although it was a friendly game, it was a huge win for them, our confidence,” Brown said in an interview days after the win. “But … more importantly, [for] Nigeria, the continent of Africa and the diaspora around the world.”
